Deváťačka Nikola se spolu se svojí mladší sestrou Anetou a jejich otcem stěhují do nového města. S tím souvisí změna školy a hledání si nových kamarádů. Nikola nastupuje do deváté třídy, do pro ni nepřátelského prostředí, kde si musí vydobýt svoje místo. Nemá to však vůbec jednoduché, protože holkám šéfuje Majda, která nelibě nese to, že třídní idol Šimon začne po nové žákyni nenápadně pokukovat. Nikola je oproti ostatním holkám trochu jiná, zúčastnila se matematické olympiády, zpívá ve školním sboru a je tak trochu šprtka, které utíkají nejnovější trendy a spolu se svým otcem musí zastat podstatnou část domácích povinností a péče o Anetu. Jejím snem je zapadnout mezi ostatní holky ve třídě a mít nové kamarády. Kluci naproti tomu řeší zcela jiné problémy, ze Šimona a jeho citů k Nikole si tak trochu utahují. Jí ale situaci neulehčuje ani její sestra Aneta, která se chová spíše jako zlobivý kluk.
Škole pevnou rukou vládne ředitelka Kadavá, která je na první pohled velmi přísná, upjatá a bez smyslu pro humor. Napjaté vztahy má zejména se zeměpisářem Vojtěchem, který je třídním učitelem našich deváťáků. Ředitelka zadá třídě , aby na školní akademii secvičili pásmo lidových písní a tanců pod vedením suchého a velmi nepopulárního učitele hudební výchovy Chramosty. Ten se s nimi sice snaží toto vystoupení nacvičovat, ale žáci se rozhodli celou akci bojkotovat a nacvičit tajně představení s třídním Vojtěchem, jenž býval slavnou rockovou hvězdou. Nácviky na akademii probíhají v kabinetu zeměpisu, vždy tak, aby je Kadavá neměla šanci odhalit. Mezitím jěště sledujeme osud mladé praktikantky pedadogické fakulty Niklíčkové, která má strach tak trochu ze všeho a díky tomu se na ní lepí jeden problém za druhým, ale zároveň v ní začíná klíčit jistá náklonnost k Vojtěchovi. Přes veškerou snahu o konspiraci Kadavá nečekaně objeví zkoušku u Vojtěcha v kabinetu, kterou rázně zatrhne. Po náhodném požáru kabinetu zeměpisu a nesmlouvavém postoji ředitelky Kadavé vypuká otevřená vzpoura mezi ní a celou třídou. Šimon s Nikolu k sobě postupně hledají cestu a sbližují se, zatímco jeho rodiče jsou proti vztahu s dívkou z nižší sociální vrstvy, což vyústí v trapnou situci při Šimonově narozeninách v jejich vile. Celá situace pak graduje na školní akademii, kde se rozpletou mnohé složité vztahy a dojde k otevřené revoltě proti ředitelce Kadavé a k závěrečnému vystoupení deváťáků spolu Vojtěchem, který se akce nakonec zúčastní díky snaze celé třídy, protože těsně před akademií dostal od ředitelky vypověď. Celý příběh však nakonec dopadne dobře a Nikola se Šimonem si k sobě najdou cestu. A nejenom oni...
